Julie Menin: Founder Ms.
Menin, 38, is Chairperson of Community Board 1 (Lower Manhattan). She
was elected Chairperson in June 2005. Previously, she
Ms. Menin is the Founder and former President of Wall Street Rising (WSR), a not-for-profit organization dedicated to revitalizing Lower Manhattan in the wake of the events of September 11th. Ms. Menin, a Downtown resident, founded Wall Street Rising a few short weeks after the September 11th attacks in order to help restore vibrancy and vitality to Lower Manhattan. Under Ms. Menin's leadership, Wall Street Rising grew to over 30,000 members.
Ms. Menin spearheaded a number of programs for Wall Street Rising including: The Corridor of Light (a lighting design initiative which illuminates building façades in the Financial District to promote vibrancy, vitality and security Downtown), WSR's Downtown Information Center (a center for residents, tourists and workers), WSR's Retail Attraction Program (to help attract new retailers to Lower Manhattan and offer them technical assistance), Art Downtown (one of the largest public art events in the history of Lower Manhattan), Do It Downtown (an annual discount card and marketing campaign to drive vital foot traffic to Downtown small businesses), and Wall Street Wednesdays (a dining initiative which increased business by over 400% at participating restaurants). She has also advocated on the behalf of Downtown residents and business owners before Congress, the State Legislature and City Council.
In June 2002, Mayor Bloomberg appointed her as a Commissioner to the City's Districting Commission. She was also appointed in 2003 to serve as a juror for the selection of the Ground Zero Memorial. Ms. Menin also sits on the Board of the Governor's Island Alliance and is an ex-officio member of the Board of the Battery Parks Conservancy. She also sits on the City's WTC Health Registry Advisory Committee and four government committees regarding the rebuilding of Lower Manhattan. In addition, Ms. Menin is also on the Board of Directors of the Women's Campaign Fund and is a member of the Women's Forum.
Prior to founding Wall Street Rising, in 2000 Ms. Menin conceived of and opened Vine restaurant, a restaurant, market and catering operation located in the Financial District.
Previously, Ms. Menin practiced law for eight years and was the Senior Regulatory Attorney for Colgate-Palmolive in New York where she specialized in regulatory and corporate issues. Prior to that, she was a corporate and regulatory attorney at the law firm Wiley, Rein & Fielding in Washington, D.C., where she specialized in regulatory and policy work regarding the Federal Trade Commission, Food and Drug Administration, Department of Justice, Environmental Protection Agency, Consumer Product Safety Commission and numerous state agencies, as well as general corporate matters.
Ms. Menin received her law degree from Northwestern University and received her bachelor's degree magna cum laude in political science from Columbia University. |
